We have new garbage bins, so our old cans are no longer needed. An article in the Calgary Herald recommended growing potatoes in them. We don’t have room to grow potatoes in the garden, but we loved the idea of growing them vertically in a can.
We already had drainage holes (it’s a very old can), so we just shoveled in some soil and compost, planted five seed potatoes, topped up with a little more compost, and set it in the back garden against the garage wall where, hopefully, it will catch enough sun.
We’ll shovel in more dirt as the plants grow, and by August we hope to be rooting around in the dirt, pulling out new potatoes to feast on.
