Leaping Characters

Characters develop and take on life in my head, run around and have their adventures. Then I try to squish them down into words and stick them to a page. Then editors get in on it, squishing and shaping some more, until finally we’re agreed and the book is published.
Then the characters leap off the page and take up residence in the readers’ heads, and when we meet, we can take them out to play together.
The weird thing, to me, is to discover the characters from my head are living inside someone else’s head. As a reader I know this happens, but as a writer – it’s new and bizarre.
