I walked through the Reader Rock Garden with my mom and younger daughter, admiring the late summer blooms. It’s an old garden, long neglected, that’s being resurrected into a stunning showpiece. The keepers of the garden discovered original plants hidden under weeds, studied historical planting lists and maps, and are slowly recreating the garden as close to its original form as possible.
One of my joys is discovering new plants I can try in my garden. And I confess to some envy. There are plants blooming there that I grow, but have never had bloom in my garden. I’d never seen them in bloom, until I spotted them in the Reader Rock Garden.
This year, finally, they’re going to bloom. Buds have been forming for weeks and I’m waiting, waiting… My Joe Pie weed has deep red buds forming as the plant grows taller, and after five years and two locations, the Japanese anemone is finally blooming, a gentle spring pink.
Outside the fence, on the city-owned land surrounding our corner lot, I let yellows and oranges play (they don’t get much space inside the garden). As fall approaches, this is the lively spot in the garden.
